What is Autism? & all the other FAQ :

What is "non-verbal" and moderate to severe Autism mean?

Autism is a spectrum, meaning every person with Autism is affected by the diagnosis differently. Moderate to severe Autism means the person is affected by Autism in a way where it can make every day life challenging and things that may seem easy or simple to others, very difficult. (Meltdowns, sensory overload, stimming, seizures, insomnia, digestive issues, OCD, ADHD, fecal smearing, PICA, self-harm, aggression, etc) "Non-verbal" means the person has very limited to no verbal communication abilities. Some individuals who are considered "non-verbal" may only be able to produce certain words or sounds and not full sentences. Zeek has not produced a full word in about 9 years, but he does make many sounds. He is able to express his general needs and wants through an Ipad (communication device) with an app (AAC device) called TouchChat. This app has icons and produces a voice when he taps the icons. This device helps Zeek communicate what he wants and where he wants to go. This device is featured in our book.

Can you "grow out of" Autism?

Autism is a life long condition. It is not possible to "grow out of it", however with a lot of love and hard work, some challenging behaviors and aspects of Autism can be managed. Those with Autism do not need to be cured, they need to be respected, loved, and recognized as the amazing person that they are for exactly who they are.
